What is Date Ariane?
Date Ariane, originally called Ariane’s Date Simulator, was a vanity project I made for my personal website in 2004. At the time I was playing a lot of social 3D virtual world games, where virtual dating was encouraged. I was not a fan of virtual dates, so I created a date simulator. It went viral in 2007, and spawned a lot of imitators.
Why make a stand alone version of Date Ariane?
If you played the online version, you got a lot of “error 503” errors due to high traffic on the web server. This makes playing online not very enjoyable. I made the game available offline so you can download and play it on your own computer, but growing concerns about web security is making the offline HTML version harder to play for many people, especially if you are using anything other than Firefox, and that may change soon as well. I don’t want to rely on browser versions anymore.
This version of Date Ariane runs on Renpy, a well respected open source visual novel engine used by hundreds of games. Besides pictures and text, it can include music, sound effects, as well as special visual effects not possible in HTML. Renpy also allows you to save games, auto forward time, run in windowed or full screen modes and even use a text reader. It creates versions for PC, Mac, Linux, and Android automatically.
Where did the online version go?
I stopped hosting it due to traffic. Newgrounds is now hosting a version here.
Why do I have to pay to download now?
The same reason I had to switch from online to stand alone, popularity. The bandwidth cost of hosting a free game made it no longer economically feasible to offer the game for free. More info here.
I play on my phone/tablet, and can’t get the Renpy version, so where is our version?
I have released a Android version, which has been downloaded thousands of times without complaint so I assume it works. There is currently no IOS version in the works as 1. It is very hard to make without a Mac, 2. Apple would not let an erotic game into their app store.
What’s a Visual Novel?
A Visual Novel is a story based video game. They are extremely popular in Japan. Think of it as a cross between a “Choose Your Own Adventure” comic book, and an adventure game with puzzles to solve. While comic books traditionally feature action stories involving super heroes, and computer adventure games traditionally feature mystery stories, visual novels are traditionally romantic stories. Visual novels (like comic books and adventure games) can really be about any genre, though Date Ariane is a romantic comedy in the Bishoujo tradition. More info on my blog or on wikipedia.
What game play differences are there between the Renpy Version and the Online Version?
The most obvious is that you use menu buttons instead of links. Player text appears after your choice instead as hover text. Initially this may seem like the game is slower, but after a while you will notice there is a better flow to the conversations in the game.
Because Renpy uses Python instead of Javascript, and the Javascript code had become an indecipherable mess over the years, I decided to write all new code from scratch. Differences in game play is inevitable as a result, however where differences exist I focused on making the Renpy version better than the online version. For testing purposes, I made sure the walkthroughs I wrote for the latest online version work on the Renpy version as well. They almost do, but there are differences.
One of the biggest differences is the elimination of “ponytail hair”. This change was way too difficult to make in the online version, but I really wanted to drop the use of ponytail hair to represent hair that could be wet or dry. Instead Ariane’s hair is always wet when in the hot tub or the pool, and remains so until she goes inside to dry off or after a shower. Ariane no longer wears a towel indoors, either. This eliminates two dress states which reduces the picture count a little. Some other rule changes have been made that make some events slightly harder, I’ll point them out in updated walkthroughs.
Other minor changes have been made as well, the nightclub and museum differ based on what Ariane is wearing there. There are a couple of small new events, nothing major, I’ll let you discover them on your own.
There are other things like game “Achievements”, 81 in all I believe. This kind of thing is not possible with the online version, and will add to replay value. Like the online version, there are also pop up hints to give you clues to Ariane’s current feelings. If you find these annoying you can turn them off in the Options screen (they are off by default). Also like online, you can cheat using the Konami Code, but this turns off achievement progress.
Can I share and redistribute the game?
For security reasons I highly recommend ONLY downloading it from links provided here on ArianeB.com. Third party sites tend to attach adware and other annoying malware on downloads, which I am forbidding as a violation of copyright, but I cannot reliably stop.
Please note that this version of Date Ariane is Copyrighted, not creative commons like the online version. You are not allowed to sell the game or make money off the game, nor are you allowed to edit or change the game in any way for redistribution. See additional legal info in the enclosed help file.
Can I mod the game?
For your own use? Yes you can. There is a subdirectory in the download called “game” where you will find all the pictures and Renpy text files used in the game. As long as you don’t redistribute your modified game, you can customize it all you want. You may need to download the Renpy developers kit and a text editor. For ownership reasons (meaning I don’t own them), sound and music files are archived. Links to download, as well as substitute file names to customize the music, are available in the help file.
How do I start the game over?
Saved games are located in two places, so you need to erase both to start over:
1. Not sure where to find it on Mac or Linux, but on a windows computer you can find it by typing “%appdata%” in your computer’s search field, then click, “roaming”, then “renpy”, then “dateariane”.
2. Another copy can be found in the game directory. Go to where you installed the game, open “games” then “saves”
In these directories, you will find a file called “persistent”. If you delete both of these files, all the game data will be erased and it will be like you are starting the game brand new. You can also delete old saved games as well.

What about other languages?
Date Ariane is now available in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Go to settings and select a language.

What’s gonna be in the remastered? Like new playable characters to play as female or male and new dialogue
Biggest game play change will be the ability to play as male or female, the most notable change will be improved graphics.
I have off and on been working on an HD version of the game (1500×1080), that I am incorporating with the slick new version of Renpy, and someone just sent me a new German translation for the current English version. Sometime hopefully later this year, I plan to incorporate all these into a new version of the game.

Ok, finally got Ariane HD to download completely. I turned down the zone levels in the internet settings and it got past the 20 mb stopping. Don’t know why but it worked for me.

Is there a real game here. I thought I had a game I could play and I didn’t like the fact that I had to download it. But I went ahead and did and I have no idea where it is. I can not find it anywhere.. I know it is on my computer somewhere, but I can’t find it anywhere. It had no windows shortcut to click on it isn’t in an games listings; I just don’t know where it is and so how am I supposed to play the stupid game?

I would love for some of my other games to be translated, but organizing Date Ariane’s translation into 4 languages was a big undertaking, and the later games are not as popular so I haven’t bothered.

If you buy the game will it come with updates or will we have to buy them each time it is updated?
If you purchase the game once, any “updates” will be free. If you purchase on itch.io, you can redownload newer versions when they come out. If you purchase from here via payloadz, I try to send out notifications and new codes via email when there are important updates, or you can request a new download code.
That being said, I am in the early stages of “Date Ariane Remastered” which I am considering a new game, not an update, so it will be a new purchase.
Then I have a follow up question to that. Will any of the other games you have have a “remastered” version? I’m trying to avoid having the same game and not having the definitive version.
The only one announced and planned is Date Ariane Remastered, which will come out sometime in 2022, but because I have not even started on it, I cannot say exactly when.
Remastering games is something all gaming developers do to take advantage of the latest graphics. Can’t say I won’t do others in the future.
Is there any chance of the classic version becoming available on this site in the future? While I appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into modernizing the game I have a soft spot for the original models and it’s hard to find most versions.
Are you talking about the old HTML version or the original Renpy?
The html version. I’m really looking for a specific version. I originally found it on funny-games.biz, which you have linked, but at some point they changed the version. I’m unsure about all the version numbering, but I would imagine I played Classic version 6 or 7? The version on funny-games.biz looks too early based on starting choices. By this version you were able to recite poetry and compliment her.
I would gladly pay for downloadable versions of the classic versions if they were possible.
