What is Ariane in Paradise?

Ariane in Paradise is the fourth game in the Date Ariane series after Date Ariane, Something’s In The Air, and Rachel and Ariane.

Do you need to play the other 3 to play Ariane in Paradise?

No!  While the last two games relied on being familiar with the previous games, Ariane in Paradise is it’s own stand alone game.  The “player character” is a new character who has just met Ariane for the first time and knows nothing about her past.

While there are “easter eggs” like characters of previous games making cameos and a few inside jokes, this game was designed with new players in mind.

How is Ariane in Paradise different from the previous games?

The newest feature is a player avatar that pop ups when the player says something.  You can make the player character male or female, and there are different scenes that happen based on your gender.  The pop up avatar will change emotions (serious, happy, inquisitive), and change clothing when called for in the game.

What kind of game is Ariane in Paradise?

Ariane in Paradise is a visual novel is a story based video game traditionally told in still images instead of fully immersive 3D. They are extremely popular in Japan. Think of it as a cross between a “Choose Your Own Adventure” comic book, and an adventure game with puzzles to solve. While comic books traditionally feature action stories involving super heroes, and computer adventure games traditionally feature mystery stories, visual novels are traditionally romantic stories. Visual novels (like comic books and adventure games) can really be about any genre, though Ariane in Paradise is a romantic comedy in the Bishoujo tradition. More info on my blog or on wikipedia.

Can I customize the game?

Yes.  I like customizing games, so all my games are easily customizable.  Download Renpy and dump the contents of the game into a renpy folder. You can use a text editor to edit the .rpy files in the “games” directory, or tinker with the images in the “images” directory.

It is a violation of copyright to distribute your own version, and it is dangerous to download from other people’s web sites.  I check all my uploads for viruses and Payloadz checks them again as I upload, so I can certify them safe, I can’t do that for third party distributors.

I’m having technical problems with the game, where can I get help?

If the error you are getting is “unknown ___” or “missing ___” on line ___ in file ____.rpy, that’s a coding error in the game. Post it in comments, and I’ll have a look. It helps if you tell me what you were doing in the game when it happened.

If you are getting a bizarre crash, or a file missing error, especially on launch, this may be a Renpy error.  Try googling the error and “renpy” for a solution. There are thousands of games using Renpy, and there are a number of known bugs on certain systems.

About 200 Patreons test played the game, and I fixed all the issues they found, so it is mostly bug free at this point.

How do I start the game over?

Saved games are located in two places, so you need to erase both to start over:

1. On a windows computer you can find it by typing “%appdata%” in your computer’s search field, then click, “roaming”, then “renpy”, then “ArianeInParadise”.  On Mac Open Finder, press Shift+Command+G and type ~/Library/RenPy/, then click on Ariane in Paradise.  On Linux ~/.renpy/arianeinparadise

2. Another copy can be found in the game directory. Go to where you installed the game, open “games” then “saves”

In these directories, you will find a file called “persistent”. If you delete both of these files, all the game data will be erased and it will be like you are starting the game brand new. You can also delete old saved games as well.
